Mirrors Edge – a fast-paced game with a cookie cutter story, horrible game play and controls. Now let’s really get to the bad news...
Story 2/10: Faith, the main character, is trying to figure out why her sister is in trouble and what is going on with her group of workers called “runners.” The “runners” are being hunted down and a murder takes place while Faith’s sister is being accused and has to prove her innocence. Again, a cookie cutter story with no depth or any character background; the game makes one wonder what’s happening and why. Personally, I feel that if the developer took more time to work on the story it would have made for a better gaming experience.
Graphics 7/10: Graphics on the game are as amazing as the Xbox360 has shown in recent months. The game’s backdrops as well as building elements are amazing and very detailed. The senses of running, jumping and falling are all presented realistically so that you feel you’re really there. Again this is the only highlight for the game.
Music 8/10: The soundtrack is perfect for the game with great mood music to accompany the action scenes when taking place. The ending credits’ song is also a nice piece that adds more flavor to the game.
Control 3/10: The placement of the button layout feels rushed and not fluid with the way the game play is, at times you see your character turning around vs. jumping when needed. The command and the movement feels at times off and non responsive, more testing and QA time should have been needed to fix this.
Game play 1/10: This is where the game is broken. If you were hoping for any navigation or direction, forget it. The game relies on turning environmental objects red to let you know they can be used to get where you’re going, however it’s up to you to know how to get there in the first place. The player runs aimlessly until finding a lead, and the main character, even on easy mode, can be taken down with 2-3 enemy hits. If she so much as touches barbed wire, she dies. The game’s directional sense of where to jump and land is broken and needs improvement. Again, more time to fix the bugs would have made this a more pleasant gaming experience.
Overall 3/10: The game had promise to be a premiere title to the Xbox360 lineup however the developer dropped the ball and decided to rush the game vs. take more time to work out the bugs. The game story is just “been there, done that” for most gamers, and that the controls need more work. The graphics and sound are well done and make the player get into the mood into playing but that is only the highlight to this title. The time trials were a great concept only if the game controls worked and responded well. I personally recommend this as a rental to anyone as the game story does not offer any replay value.
